Do you examine one thought at a time? No, you let go and observe one thought at a time. You learn to let go of your thoughts and your attachments to them. Attachments are the associated emotions that come along with the thoughts.

“Although the body is very intelligent, it cannot tell the difference between an actual situation and a thought. It reacts to every thought as if it were a reality. It doesn’t know it is just a thought. To the body, a worrisome fearful thought means “I’m in danger” and it responds accordingly, even though you may be lying in a warm and comfortable bed at night.......” Listen to the remainder of the audio from Eckhart Tolle’s “A New Earth”:

Now how do you release yourself from the attachments to the thoughts? You learn through training your mind during meditation. During meditation as you are directing your focus on either your breath, motion, nature, picture, etc, thoughts will come to your head. These thoughts will have associated emotions with them. Release the thoughts and experience the emotions without judgment. One way to release thoughts is to imagine them floating into the air as if they were a cloud. You are basically observing the thoughts and allowing them to be released without judgment. As you practice meditation more and more it becomes easier to focus on the object of meditation and thoughts will come to your head less and less. As a result, you will have less and less reactions to those thoughts. Meditation is a way to train your mind to focus and build momentum in the area of controlling your thoughts.

Do not contract your head as if to prevent the thoughts from being brought to your attention. Just relax, observe them, release them and return to your object of meditation (breath, motion, picture, etc). If you start to feel emotions, experience them without judgment also. Then gently return to your object of meditation. Of course, it is easy to say these words. This is why it is essential to practice in order that you can bring the stillness from a quiet and focused mind in to your everyday life. This is done by a process of one thought at a time.
